The economic downturn has not been cozy for customized stuffed animal retailer Build-A-Bear Workshop, where third quarter web sales fell 14.5% year over year to $1.73 million as total retail sales fell 15.2% and net loss more than doubled.

It’s no picnic at teddy bear retailer Build-A-Bear
Web sales in the first quarter at Build-A-Bear Workshop fell 16.8% to $2.5 million from $3.0 million, the company reports. Total retail sales in the quarter were down 21% to $96.3 million from $121.8 million.

Web and overall sales for fiscal full-year and Q4 2008 were all down for stuffed animal retailer Build-A-Bear Workshop. Web sales for FY 2008 were $11.8 million, down 3.2%.

Build-A-Bear Q3 web sales rose 8%, but comp store sales fell 14.4%
Stuffed animal retailer Build-A-Bear Workshop reported an 8% increase in web sales for the third quarter of 2008. Comp store sales in North America continued to slump, however, declining 14.4% in Q3 2008 vs. a 10.1% decline in the prior year period.
