Amazon boosts margins with a little help from its e-retailer friends
Not only did Amazon.com increase North American sales by 36% in the fourth quarter, it also improved its gross margin by 211 basis points to 23.6%. More sales by other merchants on Amazon.com helped improve those margins, Amazon says.

Online jewelry retailer Bidz.com posts 50% drop in Q1 revenue
Net revenue at auction retailer Bidz.com fell 49.6% year over year for the first quarter to $31.2 million. By cutting operating expenses, however, the company increased its gross profit margin by 32.7%, the retailer says.

Bidz.com’s fiscal 2008 yields a 10.8% increase in sales
Online jewelry retailer and auctioneer Bidz.com reported $207.4 million in sales for FY 2008, up by 10.8% vs. 2007 but a far cry from 41.7% growth that year. Net income for fiscal 2008 was $14.4 million, down by 20.4% compared with $18.1 million in 2007.

Bluefly’s Q1 gross profit rises more than 100% as revenues rise 34%
Bluefly, an online retailer of designer apparel sold at discount prices, posted a 34% increase in first-quarter net sales, to $11.1 million from $8.3 million in the year-ago period. Net loss narrowed 38% to $1.1 million.

Second quarter revenue at discount and closeout retailer Overstock.com Inc. reached $28.8 million, up 101% over the $14.4 million recorded in the same period a year ago, the company reported today.

Bluefly’s sales are up 8% in quarter, but loss is up 73%
Sales at Bluefly, one of the few remaining pure-play Internet retailers, increased to $8.25 million from $7.64 million in the first quarter while net loss rose to $1.84 million vs. $1.06 million a year ago.
