Blue Nile today joined Amazon in ending referrals from Rhode Island web affiliates because of legislation that would require collecting sales tax. Both retailers recently made similar moves in North Carolina and Amazon today cut off affiliates in Hawaii.

Amazon says it will leave web affiliates if North Carolina passes tax bill
Amazon.com informed its North Carolina-based web site affiliates this week that it will stop accepting referrals from them as of July 1 if Amazon has to collect sales tax under a proposed state law, a spokeswoman for the retailer says.

The web played a big role in Q1 sales growth at The Children’s Place
U.S. online sales grew 42%, or $8.4 million, in the first quarter, accounting for nearly all of the U.S. net sales increase of $8.8 million for retail chain The Children’s Place. E-commerce sales increased to 7% of total sales from 5% a year earlier.

Q3 online sales grow at 5.7%, reports the Commerce Department
Online retail sales in the third quarter grew 5.7% on an adjusted basis over the third quarter of 2007, reaching $34.4 billion, the Department of Commerce announced today. Q3 total retail sales were up 0.3%.

BarnesandNoble.com reports Q1 web sales rose 7.2%
E-commerce sales for BarnesandNoble.com rose 7.2% in the first quarter of fiscal 2008. Comparable store sales did not fare nearly as well, however, declining 1.5% while total sales grew by 1%.

Overstock cuts off New York affiliates because of new state sales tax law
Overstock.com has notified its more than 3,400 New York-based affiliates that as of June 1 they can no longer provide advertising for Overstock.com unless New York changes its web sales tax law or the courts intervene.

41% of consumers plan to use tax rebate checks on retail purchases, TNS Retail Forward says. 23% plan to put them toward everyday purchases, such as groceries and gasoline, and 19% toward a special purchase, such as a vacation, jewelry or a computer.
