Napster store lets consumers rock out however they want with DRM-free songs
Napster has launched an online store offering 6 million tunes without the anti-sharing, DRM technology many consumers find annoying. The move to offer tracks sans DRM could help Napster compete with iTunes, which uses DRM to limit the transfer of music.

Discovery pushes its TV-Internet plans with purchase of HowStuffWorks.com
As part of a move to get more unique, entertaining and educational video content on its web sites, Discovery Communications Inc. has agreed to acquire HowStuffWorks.com, which garners about 11 million unique monthly visitors, Discovery said today.

Record label Naxos steps up its online efforts
Classical music record label Naxos is offering its catalog through MusicGiants.com, which also will carry music from PentaTone, a Dutch label distributed by Naxos of America. Naxos earlier this year launched its own download store, ClassicsOnline.com.

Music industry’s future features digital sales, but not CDs, report says
Digital music sales in the U.S. will grow from $2.8 billion this year to $5.7 billion in 2011, with worldwide sales growing from $4.5 billion to $14.8 billion in the same period, eMarketer reports. Sales of CDs will decline from 55% today to 29% in 2011.

Sharper Image continues decline in monthly and Q1 sales reports
For April, total sales dipped 36% to $21.3 million from a year ago and web sales dropped 40% to $3.2 million. Q1 total sales of $65.5 million dropped 37% while web sales slid 42% to $10 million.

Digital sales outstrip CDs for Yo-Yo Ma’s new album
Cellist Yo-Yo Ma’s new album, released Jan. 9, is the first album among Sony recordings to sell more digital copies than CDs in its first week, Sony BMG Masterworks reported today. 57.1% of sales in the first week were digital.
