Overstock ends affiliate agreements in four states over sales tax rules
Following similar moves by two other major e-retailers, Overstock.com is cutting ties with affiliates in California, Hawaii, North Carolina and Rhode Island because of legislation that would require the online retailer to collect sales tax.

Amazon says it will leave web affiliates if North Carolina passes tax bill
Amazon.com informed its North Carolina-based web site affiliates this week that it will stop accepting referrals from them as of July 1 if Amazon has to collect sales tax under a proposed state law, a spokeswoman for the retailer says.

The web played a big role in Q1 sales growth at The Children’s Place
U.S. online sales grew 42%, or $8.4 million, in the first quarter, accounting for nearly all of the U.S. net sales increase of $8.8 million for retail chain The Children’s Place. E-commerce sales increased to 7% of total sales from 5% a year earlier.

Foreign sales help drive up American Apparel’s ’08 online sales 55%
With an 84% boost in web sales outside of the U.S. and Canada, multichannel retailer American Apparel posted a 55% increase in total online sales last year to $39.37 million, as total retail sales grew 41% and comp store sales increased 22%.

New York judge dismisses Amazon and Overstock sales tax suits
A New York judge has dismissed lawsuits by Amazon.com and Overstock.com challenging a new law allowing New York to collect sales taxes from web retailers with no physical presence in the state. Overstock.com immediately announced plans to appeal.

Retail sales take a dive in September
Retail sales excluding autos and food service fell 1.4% in September from September 2007 and 1.2 % from August, the U.S. Commerce Department reports. Non-store sales were up 3.1% year-over-year, but down 0.8% from August.

Online sales drop at Design Within Reach in Q2
Web sales at Design Within Reach continue to weaken as the company deals with the tough economy. For the second quarter ended June 28, web sales at the retailer fell 16% to $6.3 million from $7.5 million in the prior year.
